During Pride Month, we are reminded of the importance of visibility, safety, and affirmation for LGBTQ+ individuals in every part of our community. For survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, that need is even more urgent.

At Harbor House, we believe every survivor deserves access to safe, affirming, and compassionate support—regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Understanding the Challenges LGBTQ+ Survivors Face

LGBTQ+ survivors often experience forms of abuse that may not fit common assumptions about domestic violence. Abusive partners may use threats of “outing” someone’s identity, emotional manipulation tied to identity, or isolation from supportive communities as tools of control.

For many survivors, these dynamics are compounded by fear of discrimination or disbelief when seeking help. Transgender and nonbinary individuals may also worry about whether services will truly respect and affirm their identity.

These barriers can make it harder, and sometimes feel impossible, to reach out for support.

What Harbor House Is Doing

Creating safe spaces means more than providing services. It means ensuring those services are affirming, respectful, and responsive to each survivor’s experience.

At Harbor House, we are committed to providing trauma-informed support that affirms LGBTQ+ survivors and recognizes the complexity of their experiences. Our advocates work to ensure that every person who reaches out is met with dignity, compassion, and understanding.

This includes:

• Providing confidential advocacy and support services
• Offering shelter and safety planning for survivors in crisis
• Using survivor-centered, inclusive practices
• Ongoing staff training on LGBTQ+ experiences and needs
• Connecting survivors with affirming community resources when appropriate

Small but meaningful practices (like respecting names and pronouns, listening without assumptions, and creating welcoming environments) help build trust and safety.
