Frequently Asked Questions

Every day, people turn to us with questions about who we are, what we do, and how they can get involved. Below, youโ€™ll find clear, straightforward answers to some of the most common questions.

General Questions

  • What kinds of programs and services does Harbor House offer?

We offer a variety of trauma-informed programs to support individuals and families affected by domestic and sexual violence. These include our Domestic Violence Program, Sexual Violence Program, Children & Youth Program, Crisis & Shelter Program, Calumet County Rural Outreach Program, Prevention & Education Program, and Domestic Violence Intervention Program. Each program is designed to meet the needs of specific populations. Learn more about our programs.

When you seek help through one of our programs, weโ€™ll connect you with an advocate who will walk you through our available support services, including safety planning, one-on-one advocacy, weekly support groups, and legal advocacy. If youโ€™re staying in our shelter, we encourage you to meet with your advocate each week to discuss your specific needs and goals.

  • Is my connection to Harbor House confidential?

Yes. Whether youโ€™re calling our helpline, meeting with our staff, or staying in our shelter, your connection to Harbor House is completely confidential. We wonโ€™t share any information about you without your written permission. This applies to family members, outside organizations, or anyone else.

  • Do you offer childcare?

Unfortunately, we do not provide childcare, and children must not be left unsupervised at our facility. However, we can offer a voucher for drop-in childcare at the YMCA, which provides up to 10 hours of care per family each month at no cost. In addition, childcare is available for parents who are attending one of our support groups.

If you need additional options, your advocate can help you explore other community resources that may fit your familyโ€™s ongoing needs.

  • What should I do if something at Harbor House makes me feel unsafe or uncomfortable?

Weโ€™re committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive environment where everyone feels respected and supported. If you ever feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or witness something that concerns youโ€”including discrimination or behavior that doesnโ€™t align with our valuesโ€”please talk with a staff member. Every client deserves to feel physically, emotionally, and mentally safe while theyโ€™re here, and we take your concerns seriously.

  • What if I have a question that isnโ€™t on this list?

Weโ€™re happy to help. If you canโ€™t find the answer youโ€™re looking for, please email your question to safe@harborhousewi.org, and weโ€™ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Questions About Our Crisis & Shelter Program

  • Is my stay in your shelter confidential?

Yes. Your stay at Harbor House is confidential. We wonโ€™t share that youโ€™re staying hereโ€”even with family membersโ€”unless youโ€™ve given us written permission to do so. We also wonโ€™t share your location with outside organizations without your consent.

We also ask you to help protect the safety and privacy of others in the shelter. This means not sharing the names or personal details of other residentsโ€”even after you leave. Posting photos or tagging others on social media is also considered a violation of their confidentiality. If you disclose another residentโ€™s name or personal info, your ability to remain in our shelter may be affected.

Confidentiality is essential to everyoneโ€™s safety, and we take every measure to ensure your privacy. The only exception is if police arrive with a felony warrantโ€”in that case, weโ€™re required to comply with law enforcement.

  • Can I have visitors while staying at Harbor House?

To protect the confidentiality of our residents, we ask that any personal visits take place off site.

If youโ€™re meeting with someone from a community agency, please let a staff member know when theyโ€™ll be arriving and make sure youโ€™re near the front office at the time of the appointment.

If you call 911, contact the police, or request help from other emergency responders, please let our staff know immediately. This helps us maintain the safety and privacy of everyone in the building.

  • Who is allowed in the building?

As a nonprofit organization, we regularly welcome community members for meetings, tours, trainings, and support groups. Weโ€™ll do our best to notify you in advance when these activities are scheduled. Tour information is typically posted the day beforeโ€”or the morning ofโ€”in common areas like the elevator, kitchen, and office door.

In addition, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., there may occasionally be unannounced visitors or vendors in the building. To ensure your privacy, everyone who enters our facility is required to sign a confidentiality agreement.

  • Is there a curfew for shelter residents?

Thereโ€™s no curfew or set โ€œbedtimeโ€ at Harbor House, and youโ€™re free to set your own schedule. We just ask that you keep noise to a minimum on the bedroom floors, since everyone has different sleep patterns and needs.

  • How do I get food, and can I purchase my own food?

We provide food through the support of St. Joseph Food Pantry, and everything in the kitchen is available to all shelter residents. If you take or prepare food, please label any leftovers with the current date so we can maintain a clean and safe environment.

If you have specific dietary restrictions or needs, we can store your food separatelyโ€”just talk with a staff member to make arrangements. Culturally specific food can also be provided with the help of your advocate, so be sure to connect with them as soon as possible.

If you choose to purchase your own food that isnโ€™t tied to a dietary or cultural need, it will be considered communal unless it can be stored securely in your assigned kitchen locker.

  • Are computers available for residents to use?

Yes. We have a computer room that residents can use. To reserve time, please sign up in the binder located in the office. We ask that you limit your computer use to one hour at a time, but youโ€™re welcome to sign up for additional time later in the day.

Computers are for adult use unless a child is being directly supervised by a parent. To help keep our systems safe, please avoid visiting inappropriate websites or downloading programs.

  • Can I receive mail while staying at Harbor House?

Yes. You can have your mail sent to Harbor House by completing a change of address card with USPS. Please use the following address:

    720 W. Fifth St., Appleton, WI 54914

Mail is distributed to residents Monday through Friday. It is not distributed on weekends or holidays.

When you leave Harbor House, youโ€™ll need to update your mailing address. After youโ€™ve been gone for 30 days, any mail addressed to you will be returned to the sender.

  • What should I do if I need something during my stay?

Our staff are here 24 hours a day to support you. While they may be assisting other clients or responding to crisis situations, theyโ€™ll do their best to help as soon as theyโ€™re able.

If you need basic items, youโ€™re welcome to use the cabinet in the client resource area, which is stocked with essentials. If you have longer-term needs, you can write them down on the request list located on top of the cabinet. For other requests, please talk with a staff member or your advocateโ€”weโ€™ll need at least a day to fulfill your request, so youโ€™ll want to plan ahead when possible. If youโ€™re looking for something we canโ€™t provide on site, your advocate can help connect you with other community resources.

  • Where should I go in case of an emergency?

If the fire alarm sounds, do not use the elevator. If youโ€™re unable to use the stairs, please talk with a staff member early in your stay so a plan can be arranged. We conduct monthly fire drills, and everyone is expected to leave the building when an alarm sounds. Before exiting, please go to the designated meeting area in the wellness wing on the first floor. This allows staff to account for everyone quickly and safely. If youโ€™re unable to reach the wellness wing due to fire, go directly to the back parking lot instead.

During a tornado watch, we ask that everyone stay on the first floor so updates can be communicated quickly. If thereโ€™s a tornado warning, please go to the basement hallway. Activities, flashlights, and a weather radio will be available if needed.

In case of an intruder or other emergency, panic buttons are located throughout the building and can be pressed if needed. These alarms are loud and cannot be canceled once triggered, so please only use them in real emergencies. If an intruder is in the building, move to the nearest room that locks. For safety, all doors are connected to the alarm system and cannot be held open. Only staff and volunteers may open doors for others.

Questions About Individual Giving

  • Can I donate used clothing to Harbor House?

Thank you for thinking of us! While weโ€™re not able to accept used clothing due to limited storage space, our partner agencyโ€”the Community Clothes Closet in Menashaโ€”does. They also provide our clients with vouchers to shop there for free. Please visit their website for current donation hours and location details.

  • Can I donate a mattress or large furniture item to Harbor House?

  • How can I find out which items Harbor House currently needs?

Thank you for your interest in donating! Please check out our Current Needs List. This list is updated regularly and includes the items we need most.
